Ethernet Not Working on Windows 11? How to Fix a Wired Connection

Ethernet cable not working on Windows 11 fix

A wired Ethernet connection is supposed to be the dependable option: no signal drops, no interference, full speed. So when Windows 11 shows “Unidentified network”, “Network cable unplugged” or simply no internet on a wired connection, it’s confusing.

The good news is that wired problems are easier to diagnose than Wi-Fi ones, because there are fewer moving parts: the cable, the ports, the adapter and its settings.

1. Check the Cable and the Lights

Look at the port on your PC and on the router. A working connection usually shows a steady or blinking green or amber light.

  • No lights at all: the cable, port or adapter isn’t making a connection.
  • Unplug the cable at both ends and plug it back in until it clicks.
  • Try a different cable. Ethernet cables get damaged more often than people think, especially the small clip.
  • Try a different port on the router.

2. Test the Router Side

Plug another device (a laptop, games console or TV) into the same cable and port. If that device also has no internet, the problem is the router or your provider, not Windows. Restart the router and check its internet light.

3. Make Sure the Adapter Is Enabled

  1. Press Windows + R, type ncpa.cpl and press Enter.
  2. Find Ethernet. If it’s greyed out and says “Disabled”, right-click it and choose Enable.

Also check Settings > Network & internet > Airplane mode is off.

4. Run the Troubleshooter

Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run Network and Internet. It can re-enable adapters and reset basic settings automatically.

5. Update, Roll Back or Reinstall the Driver

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters and find your Ethernet adapter (often Realtek, Intel or Killer).
  3. If it shows a yellow warning icon, right-click and choose Update driver.
  4. If the problem started after an update, open Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver.
  5. If neither works, choose Uninstall device and restart. Windows will reinstall it.

Your motherboard or laptop maker’s support site usually has the most reliable driver.

6. Renew the IP Address

Open Terminal (Admin) and run:

  • ipconfig /release
  • ipconfig /renew
  • ipconfig /flushdns

If ipconfig shows an address starting with 169.254, your PC isn’t getting an address from the router. That points to the router, the cable, or a stuck adapter.

7. Check Speed and Duplex Settings

In Device Manager, open your Ethernet adapter’s Properties > Advanced tab and find Speed & Duplex. Set it to Auto Negotiation. A wrong fixed value here can stop the connection working entirely.

8. Reset Network Settings

Go to Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset, then restart. This reinstalls all network adapters and clears custom settings. Reinstall any VPN software afterwards.

Other Things to Check

  • VPN or security software can block traffic. Disconnect or disable it temporarily to test.
  • Powerline adapters and switches between your PC and router can fail. Connect directly to the router to rule them out.
  • USB or dock Ethernet adapters may need their own driver from the dock’s manufacturer.

If the wired connection works but is slower than expected, check the cable type. Older Cat5 cables may be limited to 100 Mbps; Cat5e or Cat6 support gigabit speeds. For wider connection problems, see our guide on how to fix internet connection problems.

How to Tell a Hardware Fault From a Software One

If you’re not sure whether the problem is the cable, the PC or the router, these quick swaps usually answer it in a few minutes:

  • Swap the cable. If a new cable works, the old one was damaged. Ethernet cables often fail at the plastic clip or where they bend behind furniture.
  • Swap the port. Try a different port on the router, and a different Ethernet port on your PC if it has one.
  • Swap the device. If a laptop works on the same cable and port, the problem is your PC’s adapter or settings, not the network.
  • Boot from a USB stick (for example a Linux live USB). If Ethernet works there, the hardware is fine and Windows settings or drivers are the problem.

Once you know which side the fault is on, you can skip straight to the right fix instead of trying everything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Ethernet connected but no internet?

Windows sees the cable, but isn’t getting a working address or the router has no internet. Renew the IP address, restart the router and check the router’s internet light.

How do I know if my Ethernet cable is broken?

Try the same cable with another device, or a different cable with your PC. If the problem follows the cable, replace it.

What does a 169.254 IP address mean?

It means your PC couldn’t get an address from the router. Check the cable and router, then renew the IP address.

Is Ethernet faster than Wi-Fi?

Usually yes, and it’s more stable, especially for gaming, video calls and large downloads.
