Android mobile data not working fix

Mobile data is switched on, you have signal bars, but nothing loads outside of Wi-Fi. Or the data icon (4G, 5G, LTE) has disappeared completely. Mobile data problems on Android have a handful of common causes, and most can be fixed in a few minutes.

1. Check the Obvious First

  • Mobile data is turned on in Quick Settings.
  • Airplane mode is off.
  • You have signal bars. No signal means no data.
  • Your data allowance isn’t used up and your plan is active. Check your carrier’s app or text balance service.

2. Toggle Airplane Mode and Restart

Turn Airplane mode on for 15 seconds, then off. This makes the phone re-register with the network. If that doesn’t work, restart the phone.

3. Check Data Limits and Data Saver

Android can stop mobile data automatically when you reach a limit you set.

  • Go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs (or Mobile network) > Data warning & limit and check whether a limit is switched on.
  • On Samsung: Settings > Connections > Data usage.
  • Turn off Data Saver while testing, as it can block background data for many apps.

4. Check App Permissions

If data works in some apps but not others, the app may be blocked from using mobile data. Go to Settings > Apps > [app] > Mobile data & Wi-Fi and allow background data and mobile data.

5. Turn On Roaming When Abroad

If you’re travelling, mobile data won’t work unless Roaming is enabled in the mobile network settings and your plan includes roaming. Check with your carrier about roaming costs first.

6. Check the Preferred Network Type

Go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Preferred network type (Samsung: Connections > Mobile networks > Network mode). Choose the automatic option that includes 5G/4G/3G. If 5G is unstable in your area, try selecting 4G/LTE.

7. Check the APN Settings

The Access Point Name (APN) tells your phone how to connect to your carrier’s data network. Wrong APN settings are a common cause of data not working, especially with new SIMs or after switching carriers.

  • Go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Access Point Names (Samsung: Connections > Mobile networks > Access Point Names).
  • Tap the menu and choose Reset to default.
  • If data still doesn’t work, check your carrier’s website for the correct APN details and add them.

8. Remove and Reinsert the SIM

Turn the phone off, remove the SIM card, check it for damage, and reinsert it. If you use an eSIM, check it’s enabled under SIM settings. If you have two SIMs, make sure the right one is selected for mobile data.

9. Update the Phone

Install system updates in Settings > System > Software update (Samsung: Settings > Software update). Updates sometimes include carrier settings fixes.

10. Reset Network Settings

This resets Wi-Fi, mobile data and Bluetooth settings without deleting your personal data.

  • Most Android phones: Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth
  • Samsung: Settings > General management > Reset > Reset network settings

When to Contact Your Carrier

Call your carrier if:

  • Mobile data doesn’t work after all the steps above
  • Other phones on the same carrier nearby also have no data
  • Your SIM shows “No SIM” or “SIM not provisioned”
  • You recently changed plans or carriers

They can check for outages, account blocks and SIM problems, and send the correct network settings.

If your Wi-Fi is the problem instead, see Android connected to Wi-Fi but no internet.

5G Problems: Should You Turn It Off?

5G can be faster, but in areas with weak or patchy 5G coverage, your phone may keep switching between 5G and 4G, which can make data stop and start. If data is unreliable:

  • Try setting the network mode to LTE/4G for a day and see whether it’s more stable.
  • On some phones, a 5G “auto” or “smart” mode only uses 5G when it’s clearly better. Choose that if available.
  • Check your carrier’s coverage map. Indoors, 5G signals are often weaker than 4G.

You can switch back to 5G any time. Stability usually matters more than peak speed for everyday use like messaging, maps and browsing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my mobile data on but not working?

Common causes are a used-up data allowance, weak signal, data limits, wrong APN settings, roaming being off abroad, or a carrier outage.

What is APN and should I change it?

The APN tells your phone how to connect to your carrier’s data network. Only change it if data doesn’t work, and use the settings from your carrier’s website.

Will resetting network settings delete my data?

No. It only resets Wi-Fi, mobile and Bluetooth settings. Photos, apps and messages are not affected.

Why does mobile data work in some apps but not others?

Those apps are probably restricted from using mobile data. Check each app’s mobile data permissions and turn off Data Saver.
